Industry 5.0: Challenges and opportunities in agro tech and food processing in this world
Authors
Dr. R Ramya
Abstract
Industry 5.0 signifies a transformative phase emphasizing human-centric, sustainable, and resilient agro-tech and food processing systems. This new paradigm leverages advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, robotics, and digital twins to enhance productivity, sustainability, and food security worldwide. The integration of these innovations offers significant opportunities, including precision agriculture, waste reduction, efficient resource utilization, and tailored food products to meet diverse consumer needs. Industry 5.0 aims to create smarter, more sustainable food systems that support environmental conservation, social inclusion, and economic growth.
However, the transition faces numerous challenges. High capital investment for cutting-edge technology adoption, inadequate digital infrastructure in rural areas, and a skills gap among farmers and food processors hinder progress. Despite these hurdles, the opportunities are vast. Smart farming techniques, IoT-enabled supply chains, automation in food processing, and sustainable practices can significantly improve yields, reduce waste, and ensure food security amid climate change. The development of bio-tech and nano-tech within agro and food sectors offers innovative solutions for crop resilience, nutrient enrichment, and shelf-life extension. Moreover, Industry 5.0 fosters inclusive growth by empowering smallholders and rural communities through access to technology and knowledge. In integrating Industry 5.0 principles into agro-tech and food processing holds the promise of transforming global food systems into more sustainable, efficient, and inclusive ecosystems. Addressing the technological, social, and ethical challenges through collaborative efforts among governments, industry, and academia is vital to harnessing these opportunities for a resilient future.
