Abstract
Crime in urban areas is not randomly distributed, rather, it reflects the complex interaction of spatial, social, economic, and environmental factors. The geography of crime examines how the characteristics of places influence the occurrence, concentration, and movement of criminal activities across urban landscapes. This paper explores the spatial patterns of crime by analyzing the relationship between urban growth, land use, population density, socio-economic inequality, accessibility, and the built environment. It highlights the role of geographic tools, particularly Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and crime mapping, in identifying crime hotspots and understanding the dynamics of criminal behavior. The study also discusses how rapid urbanization, informal settlements, inadequate infrastructure, and uneven access to public services contribute to varying levels of crime risk within cities. By integrating geographical perspectives with criminological theories, the paper demonstrates that effective crime prevention requires place-based planning, evidence-driven policing, and inclusive urban development strategies. The findings emphasize that spatial analysis not only enhances the understanding of crime distribution but also supports policymakers, urban planners, and law enforcement agencies in designing targeted interventions that improve public safety and promote sustainable urban environments. The study contributes to the growing field of urban crime geography by underscoring the importance of spatial thinking in addressing contemporary urban security challenges.
