Abstract
Local communities have an
important role to play in primary healthcare, including through traditional
knowledge about herbal plants which can be used in the absence of access to
modern medical services in many rural communities and in those that are
underserved. For centuries, indigenous people have used traditional knowledge
to prevent and treat common ailments through the use of medicinal plants. These
herbal remedies are deeply rooted in cultural beliefs, local biodiversity and
traditional healing practices, which is important component of community health
and wellbeing. In recent years traditional medicine and herbal remedies have
gained increasing recognition worldwide in the field of health care. There are
many medicinal plants used for treating fever, cough, digestive disorders, skin
infections, etc.Medicinal plants are widely used in treating fever, cough,
digestive disorders, skin infections etc. Herbal medicine continues to be used
because it is affordable, readily available, culturally acceptable and
effective for the use of local people. Traditional herbal knowledge also
promotes the preservation of traditional indigenous culture as well as useful
information for the future development of pharmacological drugs and research.
The traditional knowledge of medicinal plants is, however, at risk due to the
quick rate of biodiversity loss, environmental change and the modernization of
our society. A lot of this information is not recorded and is likely to be lost
with the older generation. Hence, documentation and scientific assessment of
local communities' use of herbs is crucial to safeguard cultural heritage and
ensure safe, effective and evidence-based incorporation of traditional medicine
into health care services and provision.
