Abstract
This paper highlights the
role of student initiatives in collaboration with the local farmers and
academic institutions in conserving indigenous paddy seeds of Kerala. The
project undertaken with the mission to sustain these traditional varieties of
seeds applied participatory action approach by involving various colleges in
the northern regions of the state of Kerala. Under the aegis of National
Service Scheme (NSS) of University of Calicut, the student volunteers worked in
collaboration with local farmers from their respective regions to collect and
document indigenous paddy seeds. This campus community partnership facilitated
organic cultivation of indigenous seeds in the colleges across central and
northern parts of Kerala through organic method. A major outcome of this
student-led project was the collection, documentation and preservation of more
than 280 varieties of indigenous paddy seeds of Kerala. This participatory
approach also strengthened the campus-community partnerships and empowered
students through experiential learning, teamwork and sustainable practices.
