Abstract
The study investigated the impact of social media on the academic performance of junior high school students in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State. Anchored in Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (1997) [9], the research adopted a positivist philosophical stance, utilizing a quantitative approach and a descriptive research design. A sample of 297 junior high school students was selected using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed both descriptively—using frequencies and percentages—and inferentially through linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that the social media platforms commonly used by the students included WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and YouTube. Moreover, the study established that social media usage had a negative effect on students’ academic performance. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the Ghana Education Service incorporate educational social media platforms such as "WhatsApp Kidz," "Kiddy TikTok," and "Facebook Kidz" into the school curriculum to enhance learning engagement. Additionally, parents, teachers, and guardians should actively monitor and regulate students’ social media usage to ensure it is focused on educational content, thereby promoting better academic outcomes.
