Abstract
The United States and India were close security allies during the Cold War since they had much in common on the political, economic and defence fronts. India’s choice to not join any military alliance helped shape the relationship and the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation, agreed in 1971, mainly led to strengthened connection with the Soviet Union. Thanks to the USSR, India’s industrial growth, the modernization of its defence and progress in technology, including space and nuclear fields, was achieved. On major global issues, India agreed with Soviet opinions and still maintained connection with the Western alliance.
