Gender disparity in the level of literacy in Haryana

Abstract
Haryana is a State with high gender disparity in literacy. Standard Literacy rate in Haryana for Urban area was 83.14% where male literacy rate was 88.63% whereas female literacy stands at 65.98%. The present study is an attempt to find out the gender disparity in literacy at district level in Haryana. The study is based upon Sopher’s method to calculate disparity in literacy. The study confirms the presence of disparities across the districts of the state. Few districts like Panchkula, Yamunanagar, Ambala, Kurukshetra and Rewari have turned out to be the best performers while some districts like Mewat, Mahendergarh, Palwal and Rewari have been identified to lag behind in the spread of educational facilities/ performance.
