Survey of gross beta radioactivity in ground water from Maiyama local government, Kebbi state, Nigeria

The survey of gross beta radioactivity in ground water from Maiyama Local Government Kebbi State, Nigeria was measured. Twenty four (24) samples were drawn by means of stratified random sampling from local hand-dug wells and boreholes. The ISO 9697 method wasadopted usingEurysis System – Multiple-Channel Gas filled Proportional Counter to measure gross beta activity concentration. The results obtained from the proportional counter show that the range of beta activity concentration varied from 0.52 Bq/L to 20.52 Bq/L with geometric mean of 10. 52 Bq/L. These results reveal that; the gross beta radioactivity in most samples is higher than the maximum contaminant limit of 1.0 Bq/L set by World Health Organization (WHO) and United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) drinking water guide lines values.
