Abstract
This study investigated performance appraisal and teacher job satisfaction in secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a correlation research design. The population of the study comprised all the 8,478 teaching staff in the 257 public senior secondary schools in Anambra State. The Taro Yamene formular was used to determine a minimum standard sample size of 381; hence, a sample of 517 teachers was drawn from the population. The multi-stage sampling approach and the stratified random sampling technique were used to draw the sample which represents 30% of the population. Two self-designed instruments entitled: “Performance Appraisal Questionnaire (PAQ)” and “Teachers’ Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (TJSQ)” were used for data collection. The instruments were duly validated by three experts. Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficients of 0.877 and 0.875 were computed for PAQ and TJSQ respectively. Research question 1 was answered using simple regression while research question 2 was answered using multiple regression. Hypothesis 1 was tested with t-test associated with simple regression at 0.05 alpha level while hypothesis 2 was tested using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) associated with multiple regression. The findings revealed, among others, that teachers’ performance appraisal in the areas of classroom management, subject mastery, extra-curricular activities, interpersonal skill and attitude to work have high positive relationship with teacher job satisfaction. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others, that principals should endeavour to appraise teachers’ performance objectively without attaching any prejudice since performance appraisal determines their job satisfaction, which invariably may lead to either positive or negative attitude to work.
