Challenges of continuous professional development activities in secondary schools: A case of selected secondary schools in chongwe district in Zambia

Abstract
The study aimed at establishing the challenges teachers face when executing CPD activities in secondary schools. The objective of the study was to determine challenges teacher face when executing CPD activities in secondary schools in chongwe district. A descriptive survey design was used when conducting this research. The study used both qualitative and Quantitative methods of data collection. The sample consisted 110 teachers of which 61 were males and 49 were females. In selecting the participants in this study, simple random sampling was used. The study employed a structured questionnaire and a focus group discussion to ensure validity of findings. The quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software while the qualitative data was analysed by coding and grouping emerging themes. The study has shown that the majority of the teachers (49.1%) did not participate in the CPD activities because they were overloaded with other teaching responsibilities. 44.3% of teachers indicated that their school managers did not support CPD activities in their schools. It also Emerged from the study that time was as serious constraint in participating in CPD programmes. This is evident from 52.7% of teachers who said that there are unable to fully participate in the CPD programmes because of lack of time. As regards to incentives, 49.1% of teachers said that school managers never attach incentives to CPD activities. The study has further revealed that CPD activities lack materials to use. The study has also shown that they are inadequate CPD meetings in a term. This is evident from 43.7% of teachers who said that CPD meetings were inadequate per time. As regards to the problems of lack of collegial collaboration, a big number of teachers 44.6% said that the problem is very high. Based on the findings, the study recommended School managers must provide incentives in order to motivate teachers to participate in CPD meetings.
