Historical development of female education in India

Abstract

The Government has emphasized female education in twenty-first century and when the historical developments are analyzed, it is found that, women were equally educated during Rig-Vedic period and other Vedic periods. During medieval period, education of women becomes restricted due to child marriage. During the British rule, due to the efforts of socio-political reformers, female basic education gradually increased. After independence, the female education is encouraged by the Government by starting women’s universities and colleges, providing fellowships and scholarships, female hostels, etc. The paper described the historical developments of female education in India.
