Evaluating the effect of pretension on the fatigue life of double lap bolted joint by analytical & numerical (FEA)

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyze the fatigue life of double lap bolted joint to improve the performance of bolted joint in aircraft applications. The methods use to analyze the life of bolt are Finite Element Analysis and analytical results to detect crack propagation. In this research, both analytical and numerical methods were used to investigate the fatigue behavior of bolted plates. The plates are of aircraft grade aluminum alloy with double lap joints is used. The test carried out for constant amplitude fatigue test for double lap joint specimens for which several torque levels were applied on bolted joints. The purpose of fatigue test is to calculate the number of cycles the specimen can withstand when several level torque is applied in increasing manner. From the result it is seen that fatigue life of double lap bolted joint was increased due to compressive stresses induced on the application of bolt pretension. These compressive stresses decrease the stress concentration around discontinuity. The cycles were calculated analytically and is been compared with numerical results is been concluded in this paper
